What is a New York State Vehicle Inspection?

All New York registered vehicles must undergo a New York State  vehicle inspection. This inspection ensures that vehicles are in good working order and do not emit harmful pollutants into the atmosphere.

Why Do I Need One?

A New York State vehicle inspection is not just a legal requirement, it’s also an essential step in ensuring your safety on the road. New York's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires all vehicles registered in the state to pass an annual safety inspection.

What Happens If I Fail My Vehicle Inspection?

If your car fails inspection, your vehicle registration will not be renewed. However, here at NextGen Car Care, our technicians will explain why it failed and recommend necessary repairs that will help you get passed.

What Should I Do If I Have Questions About My Inspection?

Our technicians are happy to help you with any questions you may have about the New York State vehicle inspection; you may also contact the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for more information.

What If I Need an Inspection Extension?

If you purchase or receive a vehicle from out-of-state, you may be entitled to an inspection extension under the terms of New York State DMV. You must complete the vehicle inspection within ten days of registering the vehicle in the state of New York. Once you register the vehicle, any inspection previously issued to the previous registrant becomes invalid.

When Do I Need To Get One Done?

You must get a New York State vehicle inspection every year (or every two years if your vehicle is over 25 years old). You need to have the inspection completed before midnight on the last day of the month listed on your current certificate of inspection. Also, any time that there is a change of registrant on any motor vehicle or trailer.

If you become a resident of New York and register your vehicle in the state, your out-of-state inspection remains valid. The out-of-state certificate or inspection sticker issued in your name is valid until it expires, or for one year after the vehicle is registered in New York State, whichever comes first. When your out-of-state inspection expires, you must get the vehicle inspected at an authorized New York State inspection station.
