Troubleshooting Your Car's Electrical System

1. Checking Your OBD: The first thing we do is use your car's On Board Diagnostics (OBD) tool  to retrieve the diagnostic trouble codes (DTC). These codes will help our technicians follow the path to your electrical system's problems. When a malfunction happens, the event gets stored and our technicians will retrieve it from the data center.

2. Tracking the Code: Based on the DTC’s we get from our OBD, we will inspect any components that look like they are involved in the identified issue. This inspection process could include checking electrical components like sensors and modules; or it could be checking the wires for harnessing issues, looseness of connections, possible corrosion, and any damage to the wires.

3. Continued Diagnostic Checks: Another method of troubleshooting is using our multimeters to test voltage/resistance on various electrical circuits. The multimeter will help us to make sure at circuits are operating at proper voltage and resistance values. When we test the various electrical circuits it will help us to isolate where the fault is located so we can get it fixed.

4. Visual Inspection: We also look at your ground circuits and other power circuits to make sure that they are doing their job properly. Power circuits and ground circuits are part of the flow of electricity from your battery and back to it again. For instance, a faulty ground in your headlight circuit can cause your head lights to flicker off and on. This is why checking  power/ground circuits is vital for electrical components to function correctly and keep you safe when you drive at night.

5. Freeze Frames: As you probably know, some car problems only appear once in a while or at particular moments of your use of the vehicle. This is why we review the freeze frame data from your car’s ECU (your car’s computer system). This freeze frame record of the event is a window for our mechanics to  see what was going on when you were experiencing your electrical problem with your car. This will help us identify the nature of the problem and get it fixed for you.
